Gethsemane

Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane and instructed them to sit while he went to pray (Matthew 26:36). He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedes, James and John, with him and expressed that his soul was sorrowful, even to death. He asked them to remain there and watch with him. Jesus moved a short distance away, fell on his face, and prayed that, if possible, the cup might pass from him, though he submitted to the will of the Father (Matthew 26:39). Upon returning, he found the disciples sleeping and questioned Peter regarding their inability to watch for one hour.

Jesus departed to pray a second and third time, using similar words regarding the cup and his Father's will (Matthew 26:42). Each time he returned, he found the disciples sleeping because their eyes were heavy. After the third prayer, he informed them that the hour was at hand and the Son of Man was being betrayed into the hands of sinners. He commanded them to rise, noting that his betrayer was approaching (Matthew 26:46).

While Jesus was still speaking, Judas Iscariot arrived with a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders. Judas had provided a sign, stating that the one he kissed was the man to be seized. He approached Jesus, said, "Greetings, Rabbi," and kissed him (Matthew 26:49). Jesus asked, "Friend, why are you here?" and the crowd stepped forward to seize him. One of Jesus' companions drew a sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear, but Jesus commanded him to put the sword away. Jesus questioned the crowd for coming against him with weapons as if against a robber, noting he had sat daily in the temple teaching (Matthew 26:55). At this point, all the disciples left him and fled.
