Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

After his arrest, Jesus was led away to the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled (Matthew 26:57). Simon Peter followed him at a distance, eventually entering the courtyard of the high priest to sit with the attendants and observe the outcome (Matthew 26:58). The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin sought false testimony against Jesus for the purpose of putting him to death, but they found none despite many false witnesses coming forward (Matthew 26:59-60). Finally, two individuals testified that Jesus claimed he could destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days, but Jesus remained silent when questioned by the high priest.

The high priest adjured Jesus by the living God to state if he was the Christ, the Son of God (Matthew 26:63). Jesus replied that it was as the high priest said, further stating that they would see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven (Matthew 26:64). Upon hearing this, the high priest tore his clothes and accused Jesus of blasphemy, asserting that no further witnesses were required. The assembly agreed, pronouncing that he was deserving of death (Matthew 26:65-66).

Following the verdict, the participants spat in his face and struck him with their fists (Matthew 26:67). Others slapped him, demanding that he prophesy and identify who had hit him. The text does not say whether Jesus responded to these specific demands for prophecy or how many people were involved in the physical assault (Matthew 26:68). The text does not say what specific time of night these events concluded or where exactly the council members went immediately after the ruling.
