The Exodus from Egypt

During the night, Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and commanded them to rise up and leave his people. He instructed both them and the children of Israel to go and serve the Lord as they had requested (Exodus 12:31). He told them to take their flocks and herds and to be gone, while also asking for a blessing. The Egyptians were urgent upon the people to send them out of the land in haste, for they believed they would all be dead if the Israelites remained (Exodus 12:33).

The people took their dough before it was leavened, carrying their kneading troughs bound in their clothes upon their shoulders. The children of Israel followed the word of Moses regarding the Egyptians, asking them for jewels of silver, jewels of gold, and raiment. The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have such things as they required, and they spoiled the Egyptians (Exodus 12:35-36).

The children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth. The group consisted of about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children, and a mixed multitude went up with them. They also took very much cattle, including flocks and herds. They baked unleavened cakes of the dough brought out of Egypt because they were thrust out and could not tarry; the text does not say they had prepared any victual for themselves (Exodus 12:39). This departure occurred at the end of four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day that the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt (Exodus 12:41).
