Midwives

Who is on this listThe BSB calls the person a midwife (Exodus 1:15).

The two Hebrew midwives who defied Pharaoh.

The king of Egypt spoke "to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah" (Exodus 1:15). He ordered them to kill every Hebrew boy at birth. Shiphrah and Puah feared God and let the boys live (Exodus 1:17). Summoned to explain, they said the Hebrew women gave birth before a midwife could arrive (Exodus 1:19). God dealt well with them and gave them families of their own (Exodus 1:20–21). They are the only midwives Scripture names.
