The Annunciation to Mary

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to a city in Galilee named Nazareth (Luke 1:26). The angel was sent to a virgin who was betrothed to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David, and the virgin's name was Mary (Luke 1:27). Upon entering her presence, the angel greeted her as one who was highly favored and stated that the Lord was with her. The text records that Mary was greatly troubled at this greeting and wondered what kind of salutation this might be (Luke 1:29).

Gabriel instructed Mary not to be afraid because she had found favor with God. The angel announced that she would conceive in her womb and give birth to a son, whom she was to name Jesus (Luke 1:31). Gabriel stated that this child would be great and would be called the Son of the Highest. Furthermore, the Lord God would give him the throne of his father David, and he would reign over the house of Jacob forever, with a kingdom that would have no end (Luke 1:33).

Mary asked the angel how this would be possible, noting that she had not known a man. The angel replied that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Highest would overshadow her (Luke 1:35). Consequently, the holy one to be born would be called the Son of God. Gabriel also informed her that her relative Elizabeth had conceived a son in her old age and was in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37). Mary identified herself as the servant of the Lord and requested that it happen according to the angel's word, after which the angel departed (Luke 1:38).
