Jesus Walks on Water

Jesus constrained his disciples to enter a ship and go before him to the other side while he sent the multitudes away. After dismissing the crowds, he went up into a mountain apart to pray and remained there alone when evening arrived (Matthew 14:22-23). The ship was in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves because the wind was contrary. During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went unto the disciples, walking on the sea (Matthew 14:24-25). When the disciples saw him, they were troubled and cried out for fear, believing it was a spirit. Jesus immediately spoke to them, telling them to be of good cheer and not to be afraid.

Peter answered Jesus, requesting that if it were him, he should bid Peter to come unto him on the water. Jesus said, 'Come.' Peter walked on the water to go to Jesus, but when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid and began to sink (Matthew 14:28-30). Crying out for the Lord to save him, Peter was immediately caught by Jesus’ extended hand. Jesus asked him why he doubted and referred to him as having little faith. The text does not say how far they walked together back to the vessel.

When they entered the ship, the wind ceased. Those who were in the ship came and worshipped Jesus, declaring that he was the Son of God (Matthew 14:32-33). The text does not say the specific distance from the shore at which this occurred, nor does it record any further dialogue between the disciples following their declaration of his divinity.
