Jairus's Daughter and the Bleeding Woman

When Jesus returned by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him. A synagogue leader named Jairus approached, fell at his feet, and pleaded for Jesus to come to his house because his little daughter was dying (Mark 5:21-23). As Jesus went with him, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years approached from behind in the crowd. She touched his garment, believing that doing so would make her well, and the text states her flow of blood dried up immediately. Jesus, perceiving that power had gone out from him, turned to ask who had touched his clothes. Though the disciples noted the crowd was pressing against him, the woman came forward in fear and told him the whole truth. Jesus told her that her faith had made her well and commanded her to go in peace (Mark 5:29-34).

While Jesus was still speaking, people arrived from Jairus's house to report that the daughter was dead. Jesus told Jairus not to fear but to believe. He allowed no one to follow him except Simon Peter, James, and John, the brother of James (Mark 5:35-37). Upon arriving at the house, Jesus observed a commotion with people weeping and wailing loudly. He asked why they were making a commotion and stated the child was not dead but sleeping. The people laughed at him, but Jesus put them all outside and took the child's father, mother, and his three companions into the room where the child was.

Jesus took the child by the hand and said, "Talitha cumi," which means "Little girl, I say to you, arise." The girl, who was twelve years old, immediately got up and began walking (Mark 5:41-42). Those present were overcome with amazement. Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about the event and told the family to give the girl something to eat. The text does not say how the crowd outside reacted to the girl's recovery.
