The Four Riders

The Four Riders appear in the vision of the scroll with seven seals as recorded in the sixth chapter of the book of Revelation. These figures emerge sequentially as the first four seals are opened, each summoned by one of the four living creatures who commands them to come. The text describes these riders as symbolic agents who bring specific forms of devastation to the earth during a period of judgment. Their appearance is defined by the color of their horses and the specific objects they carry or the authority they are granted.

The group is organized by the order of their appearance, beginning with the Rider on the White Horse who carries a bow, receives a crown, and rides out as a conqueror bent on conquest (Revelation 6:2). He is followed by the Rider on the Red Horse, who is given a large sword and the power to take peace from the earth so that people kill each other (Revelation 6:4). The third figure is the Rider on the Black Horse, who holds a pair of scales in his hand while a voice mentions the high prices of wheat and barley (Revelation 6:5–6). Finally, the Rider on the Pale Horse appears, and the text explicitly names him Death while noting that Hades follows close behind him (Revelation 6:8). These four figures are granted authority over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine, plague, and the wild beasts of the earth.

Scripture preserves this roster to illustrate the unfolding of divine judgment and the systematic dismantling of earthly security. The progression from conquest and open warfare to economic scarcity and mass mortality serves as a literary framework for the tribulations preceding the final judgment. By identifying each rider through distinct colors and tools, the text provides a concrete visualization of the various forces that affect human history under the opening of the seals. The Four Riders represent the initial phase of a larger series of catastrophic events that lead toward the conclusion of the age.
