The Baptism of Jesus

Jesus traveled from Galilee to the Jordan to reach John, intending to be baptized by him (Matthew 3:13). Upon His arrival, John attempted to prevent the act. John stated that he had need to be baptized by Jesus and questioned why Jesus was coming to him instead. Jesus responded by instructing John to permit it for the present time, stating that it was proper for them to fulfill all righteousness in this manner. John then consented to the request (Matthew 3:14-15).

After being baptized, Jesus immediately came up out of the water. At that moment, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him (Matthew 3:16). The text does not say if others present saw the opening of the heavens or the descent of the Spirit.

A voice spoke from heaven during this event. The voice declared that Jesus is His beloved Son, in whom He is well pleased (Matthew 3:17). The text does not say who else, besides Jesus, heard the voice or how long the phenomenon lasted.
