Peter Raises Tabitha

In Joppa, there was a disciple named Tabitha, which is translated as Dorcas. The text describes her as being full of good works and charitable deeds. During this time, she became ill and died. After her body was washed, she was placed in an upper room (Acts 9:36-37). Because Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him. They requested that he come to them without delay (Acts 9:38).

Upon his arrival, Peter was taken to the upper room. All the widows stood by him weeping, showing him the tunics and garments that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter sent everyone out of the room and knelt down to pray. The text does not say the specific words of his prayer, but afterward, he turned to the body and said, 'Tabitha, arise.' She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up (Acts 9:39-40).

Peter gave her his hand and lifted her up. He then called the saints and widows and presented her alive to them. The text does not say how long Tabitha remained in Joppa after this event, nor does it provide her age. Following the miracle, Peter stayed in Joppa for many days with a man named Simon, a tanner (Acts 9:41-43).
