Jesus in the Temple at Twelve

At the age of twelve, Jesus traveled to Jerusalem with his parents for the Feast of the Passover, following their yearly custom (Luke 2:41-42). When the festival ended and his parents began their return journey, Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, though Joseph and his mother remained unaware of this (Luke 2:43). Assuming he was among their group of travelers, they journeyed for a full day before they began looking for him among their relatives and acquaintances (Luke 2:44). After three days, they located Jesus in the temple sitting among the teachers, where he was listening to them and asking them questions (Luke 2:46). Those who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers (Luke 2:47). Upon seeing him, his parents were astonished, and his mother asked why he had treated them in this manner, noting that she and his father had been searching for him in distress (Luke 2:48). Jesus asked why they were looking for him and inquired if they did not know he must be in his Father’s house, though the text states they did not understand what he was saying to them (Luke 2:49-50).

Jesus then went down with them to Nazareth and was submissive to them, while his mother kept all these things in her heart (Luke 2:51). The text does not say what specific questions Jesus asked the teachers or the specific route they traveled during the three-day search. It also does not say what the teachers specifically said in response to Jesus (Luke 2:46-52). The account concludes by noting that Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man (Luke 2:52).
